PR inspiration from Santa Claus

Even if you are old enough to know the truth about Santa Claus, we can learn a few PR lessons from him.

PR Daily has written a great article about how to tap into Santa Claus’ Christmas spirit to make improvements to your PR strategy for next year.

Make a list
Making lists is important in PR, especially if you are dealing with a number of different journalists and media opportunities at the same time. Santa Claus makes a list of all the children he needs to deliver presents to, and also so his elves make the right presents and don’t miss any children.

If you need to send out a media release to a number of journalists then creating a media list is a crucial first step. With a list you can ensure you don’t send the media release twice to the same journalist or to more than one journalist at the same publication. It also helps you to record your responses to determine who you need to follow-up.

Plan and deliver presents
Each year Santa plans his presents well in advance and then delivers them on time. Being organised and delivering on your promises is an essential PR skill. If you have promised to provide an article or an interview to a journalist by a certain deadline then you need to fulfil this promise. Providing an article usually involves a lot of planning and preparation beforehand to ensure you have the article written, edited and ready to send before the deadline. If you are not organised you may miss out on a great media opportunity.

Build your reputation
Santa has a great reputation and an internationally well-known brand, which he has been building for centuries. Building your own business’ brand and reputation is not something you can achieve overnight. You will need to implement a long-term PR strategy to raise your profile and get your business seen by your target audience. It’s a great idea to start your PR strategy now to build your reputation for the future and increase customers’ trust in the business.

Tis the season to be jolly
Santa embodies the Christmas spirit of gift giving, kindness, happiness and helping those less fortunate. Your business can be inspired by Santa’s jolliness to treat your customers, clients and the media with kindness and respect. What better time than Christmas to show your customers you care or to give something back to the community. This may involve offering your loyal customers a discount, donating to charity or even implementing customer feedback.

It’s also a great time to show kindness to the media, especially those journalists you frequently contact and who regularly publish stories about your business. You could do this by sending them a thank you email or card if they publish a great story about your business or even sending them a Christmas card.

So take a leaf from Santa’s book and implement some of these great tips to improve your business’ PR strategy for 2013.
