Branding used to be the concern of large businesses only, but with social media, any business can easily build their personal brand. Personal branding allows you to humanise your company and differentiate yourself from the competition.
Shawn Hessinger has written an article on the Personal Branding Blog about how to build your brand on social media. He says that in 2011, you are who people say you are and a large part of this is the way your brand is seen online. His steps for building your personal brand are:
- Register your social media accounts. You must decide whether to use your company name or your personal name. Either is fine, but be consistent across your social media accounts so that you can build your identity. The essential sites are Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
- Create a home base. One of the main goals of social media sites is to drive customers to your website. This is where the brand will really be made. You can provide in-depth information about your company and services, and control the messages and interaction.
- Build content. Create a hub of relevant, useful information that your customers can learn from, share and promote. Position yourself as an expert. The content could be in the form of a blog, articles, videos, webinars or anything else that works for you.
- Be social. Comment on other blogs, be a guest blogger and always respond to questions asked of you on your social media accounts.
