Julia Gillard redefining her spotlight

In the years that Julia Gillard was Australia’s first female TEDx 9Prime Minister, she was subject to intense, and at many times cruel, media scrutiny.

Now, Gillard has stepped away from the media spotlight and cemented her legacy as one of the world’s top education leaders.

Owning the spotlight does not just mean having a loud voice in the media. Just like Gillard, owning the spotlight can mean working hard at something that is close to you, and being well known in your field of expertise.

Share your purpose

Instead of just thinking about how much media coverage you can get so you can increase your sales, think about how you are contributing to society, how you can help others. If you can help someone, and tell that story, your reputation will become priceless.

For Gillard, her purpose is to direct attention, money and education resources to the world’s most disadvantaged children, especially young women. When Gillard now faces the media, her objective is selfless and she is able to own the spotlight as the coverage is not aimed for her personal gain.

Let your passion drive you

You need to ask yourself the question, “What is my passion?” Finding your purpose and uncovering your ‘why’ will help you succeed and become noticed.

When Gillard made her “misogyny speech” in the Australian Parliament, she was thrust into the international spotlight. Since then, and after moving on from being Prime Minister, Gillard has used her passion for equality, and also her passion for education, to rise to the top of the international stage.

Be passionate and work towards what you believe in.

Redefine the spotlight

We all have stories to tell that will help others in some way. Our personal experience and expertise that we have developed in our lives should be shared, especially if those stories will benefit others. The world needs to hear what you have to say.

When Gillard moved on from being Prime Minister, she focused on telling the stories of those children who do not have access to education. By using her spotlight to shine a light on the important issues she is passionate about, Gillard has become the prime example on how someone can redefine their spotlight.

You can do it too!
