Tips to get the Twitter conversation started

Twitter is all about conversation. It is an opportunity to link with people that you would never have been able to connect with otherwise. But if you’re struggling to connect and build your network, you might need to look at your technique.

Social Media Today has given some tips on how to successfully start up a conversation on Twitter.

1. Have a purpose.
Set goals and objectives to help you understand what you are doing on Twitter and why you are doing it. Develop a plan that supports your own business goals and objectives.

2. Know who you are talking to.
Get to know your followers and make sure they are the right kind that will help you achieve your business goals. Learn what content they are consuming, sharing and commenting on as this will help you understand how to help them, which in turn will create better results for you.

3. Know what they want to talk about.
The easiest way to get your followers to start talking to you is if you start talking about something they care about or are passionate about. Watch what content they share and use it as leverage to build a conversation.

4. Know what you want to talk about.
It is important that you stick to your plan and stay focussed on your goal when it comes to conversing on Twitter. Spend time talking about something of value, that inspires conversation, rather than wasting time chatting about something with no purpose, plan or return on investment.

5. Give them a reason to have a conversation.
Many on Twitter have been conversing for years, so if this is your first time plan to grab some attention and connect by offering your followers something different to what they see every day. Show your followers you are human and that you are more than just a robot sending automated messages with links to your blog.
