How to create engaging content for your blog

Regularly coming up with interesting topics for your blog can be challenging, especially trying to figure out what would be interesting for your audience.

As a business leader and entrepreneur, blogs are a prominent tool to position yourself as a thought leader and an expert in a particular field. But when you start scratching your head thinking about the next topic to write, it can be frustrating.

Here are some tips to think about when creating engaging content for your next blog.

Conduct research
Before you start writing, it is a good idea to conduct some research and take a look at blogs within your area of expertise, blogs you’ve read before, and blogs you currently read. Look up your competitors’ blogs and people you admire in your industry to get an idea of what they are publishing and how their readers interact with them. Find out what works for them, and what you don’t think works so you can get a step ahead of them.

Understand your Audience
Research your audience and how to best approach them. By writing newsworthy topics, you can expand your audience and simultaneously increase audience engagement.

Questions to ask yourself are:

  • What is the purpose of the blog post?
  • How does the blog post aid your audience to achieve their goals?
  • Where does the audience typically access their information from?
  • How do I engage with the audience?

For more way on targeting your audience go here.

Explore different mediums
Sometimes, blogs can just be a whole lot of long form prose. By sticking to this one type of medium, you are limiting the growth of your blog channel and the reach of your audience.

Some other blog posts formats to consider include:

  • Images
  • Graphics
  • Infographics
  • Quotes
  • Videos

Have subheadings
Subheadings are useful signposts to guide readers through your content and enable easier readability and scanning. Make sure the font is reader friendly, for instance Calabri, and avoid writing in all capitals. Bold all headings and subheadings to make them stand out.

The importance of keywords
Not only does keywords increase your search engine optimisation, keywords ensure that your audiences are understanding your posts and continually read on. Keywords are specific word choices and orders to give your blog a higher change in moving up on a search engine and your audience to click onto your blog.

Have a call to action
By including a call to action, you direct your audience to what the next steps are. This call to action continues the flow of your content outside of your blog and ultimately increases your chance of return of readership.

Blogging is a great way to spread and control your message, and widely connect with your audience on a personal level. In order to effectively position yourself as a thought leader and an expert in your field, you will need to understand what makes a blog engaging.
