One goal of public relations is to portray yourself or your client in a positive way and build relationships with journalists that will result in great coverage, but there are some actions that can cause more harm than good.
All Business has outlined some common mistakes to avoid in PR.
- Poor timing. PR is all about planning ahead. You need to take into account lead time for magazines and newspapers, or your media releases will be irrelevant.
- Badly written media releases. Many journalists will delete media releases because of spelling mistakes, poorly worded sentences or wrong information. Be concise, interesting and don’t leave out important details.
- Poor follow up. When you send out a media release, be prepared for questions that you may be asked when people call.
- Lack of planning. Successful PR depends on knowing where, when and how you are going to proceed. You also need to be flexible and be prepared to adapt your plan if it doesn’t work.
